How to Play

Easy to learn, infinite depth. Five minutes to start, a lifetime to master.

01

Start the Game

Open Dice War and first select the number of players (2 to 8). You can assign some slots to AI or have all slots played by humans taking turns. After selecting the player count, the system generates a random hexagonal map and distributes territories among the colored factions. Each player's starting territories receive 1 to 8 dice at random — this is your initial military force.

Map size adjusts automatically based on player count — 2-player matches use smaller maps for tighter pacing, while 8-player brawls use large maps with ample room for expansion. If you're not satisfied with the initial layout, restart for a new map.

Tip: Starting dice counts are random — with luck, you might begin with a fully stacked (8 dice) territory. At the start, survey the entire map and identify where your faction is most concentrated — that's your core expansion direction.

02

Select Territory & Attack

On your turn, click one of your territories with 2+ dice — it highlights as selected. Then click an adjacent enemy territory to attack. The system automatically calculates attacker and defender dice counts and displays them. Confirm, and both sides roll all dice simultaneously.

Each die shows a random value from 1 to 6, and all dice on each side are summed. If the attacker's total exceeds the defender's, the attack succeeds — your dice advance to occupy the new territory, leaving 1 die behind. If the attack fails (including ties), your attacking territory retains only 1 die, and the defender is unaffected.

Win Probability Reference: The table below shows approximate win rates for attacker dice vs defender dice. More dice means better odds, but never underestimate the power of luck.

Special Dice

Beyond ordinary dice, every reinforcement phase has a chance to grant two special dice: Gold Dice — always rolls a 6, appearing with a 5% chance — and Silver Dice — rolls 4 to 6, appearing with a 10% chance. Special dice are skipped during the first round of each match, keeping the opening fair.

On the map, gold dice glow gold and silver dice glow silver with distinctive auras, so they stand out at a glance. In battle, a single Gold Die guarantees 6 points while Silver Dice average 5 — powerful force multipliers that can turn the tide of an attack.

Special Dice Tip: Territories stacked with gold and silver dice are excellent launch points — their high minimum rolls give you far better odds when attacking well-defended enemy positions.

04

End of Turn & Reinforcements

As long as you still have territories holding 2+ dice, you may keep attacking. When you are done, click "End Turn" to enter the reinforcement phase. Reinforcements equal your largest connected territory group: 1 connected tile = 1 die. Linking your land into one big block — and cutting the opponent's block apart — is how you snowball.

Because supply is tied directly to connectivity, one large connected block is far more valuable than the same area split into scattered territories. Each territory holds at most 8 dice; surplus reinforcement dice go to your reserve (cap 30) and refill your territories automatically.

Connectivity is King: A 5-tile connected block earns +5 dice every turn, while two scattered 3-tile blocks — though larger in total — earn only +3. Connection quality beats raw territory count.

05

Turn Order & Komi Compensation

At the start of every match, the turn order of all players (including humans) is shuffled randomly — the first player is never fixed. When it's a faction's turn, they execute a complete "attack + reinforce" turn, then pass to the next. Eliminated factions are skipped until only one color remains on the map — the conqueror is born.

To keep things fair for later players, a Komi compensation grants bonus starting dice based on your turn rank r (0 = first player): round( r ÷ (players − 1) × 0.25 × your starting dice total ). Bonus dice are placed randomly on your own territories — going second no longer means starting behind. In matches with AI, the AI executes its turn automatically, usually in seconds.

06

Victory & Defeat

When all territories on the map turn to your color, you've won Dice War. The victory screen showcases your conquest journey — from a small starting territory to total continental unification. If your faction is completely eliminated, you lose, but can continue spectating the remaining factions.

The charm of Dice War lies in the fact that even when things look one-sided, a crucial dice reversal can turn everything around. An 8 vs 3 attack isn't 100% guaranteed — that tiny chance of failure is exactly what keeps comeback hopes alive. Stay patient, seize every opportunity, and you never know when victory will arrive.
